Summary, etc. | Vertical column aeroponics is a relatively new veriation of hydroponics which initially was practiced by misting the roots of a suspended plant with nutrient solution. However, hydroponics has been practiced for several decades and is defined as a method of growing plants with no soil with their roots completely submerged in the nutrient solution. Both of these techniques, aeroponics and hydroponics, are considered to be soil-less agriculture and more recently have been designated as controlled environment agriculture. This book explores the history of the development of aeroponics which is rooted in the fundamental discoveries associated with botany and chemistry and is directly related to the development of hydroponics. The book attempts to clearly define what aeroponics really is and to point out the similarities and differences with concomitant hydroponic growing methods. This book has provided and overview of the state-of-the-art of aeroponic technology from multiple vantage points. It has provided the context which has enhanced the reason why aeroponics has emerged as a new agricultural technology. It has defined what it is and given several examples of aeroponic systems that are functioning today in a variety of settings. These include home use, academic research, business development, innovation, and the practical applications of its principles. |
